Loving Watercolors!

I am taking the Watercolor Class - Intermediate at Online Card Classes.  I am barely through Lesson 1 (ok, I'm NOT through Lesson 1 yet!) and have already learned so much.  It's a really great class and if you have any interest in increasing your watercolor skills then I certainly recommend it!

In the pre-class exercises we worked on color swatching, color mixing, and transparency vs. opacity in our paints.  Very interesting stuff there! In Lesson 1 we actually created a card where we applied our new found knowledge of creating color washes.  Interesting and fun stuff!

The instructor, Dawn created a really awesome card by tracing around a pear and dropping color onto it.  I didn't have anything like that and the supplies I had on hand were limited so I cut out a design with my Silhouette and traced around it.  Two little birdies.

Here's the first one I did with Kuretake Gansai colors:

The bird on the right got a little muddied as the colors mixed but it was fun to do anyway, and since I took this photo with my iPhone the colors may be a bit off.  I think they are more vibrant in real life.
I used a Lawn Fawn sentiment stamped in Hero Arts Cup o' Joe.

Then I did it again using Winsor and Newton tube paints.  Basic red, blue, and yellow that I mixed for a variety of colors.

I love the variations of the red, blues and purples.....a little yellow and red for an orangey beak and all the colors mixed for some variations in brown on the limb.  I stamped the sentiment with MFT's Things With Wings stamp set.

And voila (!)....they look like birds on a limb! LOL! Very fun to do and pretty easy...but of course, you'll never get exactly the same results twice.

Off to Lesson 2 1b!

Happy Crafting!

Reinventing the Wheel...

Sometimes you learn how to do something....and then if you're like me you don't practice enough and *whoooooosh* that newfound knowledge escapes to some place unknown where all that newfound knowledge goes!

Several months back I bought a PixScan mat and googled and read and googled and read and googled and read how to do cut out stamped images with my Silhouette.  I thought..."what great technology"....I need that knowledge.  Well, I got the knowledge and then as I said previously....*whoosh*...it was gone. It might be laying around somewhere but it certainly couldn't be found in my brain!

So I had some time the other day to try to find the knowledge again (which I did) and I thought..."now how am I going to remember it?"  It certainly won't stay in my brain as there is no room to hold onto newfound knowledge.  My brain is already overflowing with more important things like "did I turn the coffee pot off", "is today trash day?", "where is my (fill in the blank)?", etc.

I thought to myself that if I wrote myself a tutorial on my very own blog I can access what worked for me in the future (and, of course 'future' means anytime after this particular second!

I know you all know what I'm talking about!

(Now, if you do not have a Silhouette or have absolutely NO interest in this technology you can just skip on down to the end and see a couple of cards I made.  And thanks for looking!)

Here is my tutorial:

1. Your Silhouette software must be calibrated to the source that captured your original image.  In my case, it is my iPhone and I have already done that.  But if it gets out of calibration then look HERE for how to calibrate. Once your phone is calibrated you shouldn't have to do it again.  Shouldn't have to....but then again, who knows?  Anyway, mine was still calibrated just fine after the previous attempt.

2. Stamp your images on your paper in whatever ink you desire to use, keeping in mind what you will use to color them (watercolor pencils or brushes, Copics, etc).  Of course, you can go ahead and color prior to cutting if you wish but I hate the idea of spending a lot of time coloring to have my cuts not be quite right.

3.  Then place your stamped images on your Pix Scan mat making sure that it is within the black outlined rectangle and take a picture "straight on" of the images.
By the way....these oh-so-cute images are from My Favorite Things "Things With Wings" stamp set.
4. Next you go to your handy dandy computer and pull up your Silhouette software (I use Designer Edition but any will do).
5. Go to File in the top left....click on it and then find Open PixScan Image and click on it.
6.  Over on the right of your screen you will see a window open up (the previous image you had imported will also show up but disregard that) and click on "Import Pixscan Image from File".

7. Find your image on you computer....I had mine in my Dropbox folder and click on it.
8. Then your little window on the right of your computer screen will looks something like this and you will see some blue and white lines in motion where it says "Loading Image".
....and the image you are importing will also show up.  Cool!

9. Then on the main part of the working surface of the software your image will show up....like this:
  10. OK....now you need to start telling Silhouette what you want to cut.  So the first thing is to go to your Trace window which is the square highlighted in the blue.  The Trace window will pop open with some options.  You will need to select your Trace Area so click on that and then go to your image and click on what you want to trace.

11.  I wanted to trace everything of course so highlighted the whole kit and caboodle!
Once you have your traced area the way you want it.  (There are tips to tracing but I will not go over them here.  Check this link out HERE if you want some basic info on tracing.)

12.  Select the part of the image you want to trace.  In my case I wanted the Trace Outer Edge option.

13. Now you will have cut lines right on the edges of your images.  I wanted to cut with a white edge so I needed to add in another step.  I think cutting with an offset is probably a little more forgiving but I will make a note to myself to try to cut on the image at some point!

14. So now I go back to the top of the screen and click on the Offset Window.
The following window will open.  Make sure your images are selected and then click on "Offset".
( IMPORTANT!: One thing to remember at this point is that you still have cut lines on your image and at some point you will need to drag all of those off the cutting page. You most likely will not want to cut out the image with the offset and then on the image itself!)

16. You will then have red cut lines around your image.  You will need to use the slider bar or arrows above to increase or decrease the amount of the offset.  I found that for me 0.040 worked perfectly for me.

 17. At this point you may need to clean up your image as some things may be identified for cut which you do not want cut.  For example....in the little bird above were some extra "cuts" inside the wings I didn't want cut.  I simply went to the top of my computer screen and clicked on Object and then Release Compound Path and then was able to delete those little bits of junk I didn't want cut.

17.  Here is my totally cleaned up image ready for cut (the original cut lines have been moved off the screen....you just can't see them here.)
 18. Then you simply load your mat and set your cut settings the way you want.  I used Neenah heavy cardstock so used coverstock as my choice and actually even engaged double cut.

19.  This is what I ended up with:

So what does one do after cutting out 427 pieces?  Why make 50 2 cards, of course!
Here is the first one colored with a variety of water color pencils.

This one was colored with Zig Clean Color Real Brushes.

I used Distress Inks to create the backgrounds and some stitched dies from Simon Says Stamp.

You can see how nicely the PixScan technology worked!

And Onto 2016!

Wishing all of you A VERY Happy New year! I'm hoping that 2016 is a wonderful year of creativity and happiness for all!

I had a very busy 2015! I was lucky to do some serious traveling and saw all parts of the world.  Many of you know I did an Around the World trip in June and July....we traveled to 8 countries and went over 25,000 miles! It was definitely a dream of a lifetime....I doubt we'll ever be able to duplicate that unless we win the Powerball Lottery! HAHA!

We did end the year with another incredible trip...we went to London, England for about 5 days and then to southern Germany for about 10 days or so. I was born in Germany to a German mother so going back always feels a bit like home.  I had a bucket list item to see Germany during the Christmas season....I had wanted to go to the Christkindl Markts which are common in Germany during the Lenten season.  And I was not disappointed!  We had a fabulous time flying into Frankfurt and touring Mainz (on the Rhein), Heidelberg, Karlsruhe (the city in which I was born and also on the Rhein River), Munich and Nürnberg. Nürnberg is the site of one of the oldest and most well known Christkindl Markets and it did not disappoint.  I had visited there as a teen with my parents and it had always been on my bucket list to return.  I got to check that off my list!

With all the travel and preparations for Christmas I got very behind on crafting! Yes, I've done some but just haven't made the time for sharing.

I hope to do a bit better blogging in 2016.  No promises but I do enjoy sharing so hope to be a bit more successful!

My very good friend, Cyndi, shared with me a project she recently completed for her grandchildren.  She had taken a 16 inch bamboo tray and purchased a 15 inch Lego baseplate which she glued inside the tray.  This makes a very nice little tray for Lego building...and since the tray has sides around it...maybe little pieces will not fall off the table as much.  I don't know about you but the placement of a Lego on the ground is directly proportional to where you will step in bare feet! LOL!

So I decided to CASE her design (Copy And Steal Everything) and make my own for my grandchildren.  The tray was purchased at Walmart and I got the baseplate on Amazon.  The plate was glued in with some E6000 adhesive (good. strong stuff).

I used my Silhouette to cut out a Lego logo as well as some Lego blocks in vinyl.  The logo was found online and the blocks were files purchased in the Silhouette online store.  The little Legos took a little while to create as there were each 4 layers of vinyl!  But it was fun to do and although not perfect...I think my grandchildren will enjoy.

So here are the pictures of the finished Lego tray:

Daddy and Us

I came across a very cute little file in the Silhouette online store.  It is actually a card designed by Suzanne Cannon and looked like this:
I thought it was really cute...with the cutout shoes and decided to personalize it for my son in law from his 3 little ones.  I changed the orientation of the card and added in two more pairs of shoes sized to represent my grandchildren.  I backed with blue and pink paper (2 boys, 1 girl, of course!).
After it was done I decided it was just too "meh" for me so cut the panel and used it as a card front on a mat and base.  It just needed a little more pizzazz for me.  Instead of cutting out Daddy and Me...or Daddy and Us in this case I stamped with some Paper Smooches stamps I had on hand.
The card is approximately 6.5 by 5 (or something like that) so when done I made an envelope with the We R Memory Makers Envelope Punch Board.
My daughter will get her three to "sign" their names....and will give it to him for Father's Day which is coming soon.
That's it for today.

Gifting Cards

I recently was asked to address some envelopes for a friend's daughter's wedding invitations. I enjoyed doing it so much...I dabble in calligraphy and decorative writing so it was so much fun to do it. I was really happy with the results...I handed the finished envelopes off to the bride's mother the other day and she said she loved them and thought they looked fantastic. I was proud. LOL!

I decided it would be fun to make the bride a set of thank you note cards that she could send out.  I had asked her mother what the bride's wedding colors were and she said "cream, blush, and celadon green".  What the heck??!  LOL!!! I'd never heard of celadon green but apparently it's a grayish green. Anyway, I figured the chance of getting an exact match with that green would be difficult so decided to just use some paper from an "old" paper stack I had on hand.  I used Neenah off white cardstock for my base.  I decided to make the cards mostly flat for easy mailing for her.  I initially put ribbon on but decided to minimize it and simplify it and took the ribbon off.

I used my new BFF MISTI to stamp the sentiment and am always amazed how quick and fast it is to use when you are doing multiple cards AND most importantly for me...how easy it is to align to get the perfectly straight look.

Here are the cards and I used the Paper Smooches Roses die set and the sentiment is Paper Smooches Lovely Thoughts:

 I love that die set....

I also used the stitched rectangle set for my mat from Simon Says Stamp. The mat was popped up on some Stampin' Up foam dimensionals.

I added a few gold pearls for a little more interest and they were done pretty quickly.

Fun and easy...and I think she will enjoy using them for some "special" thank yous!

I also made a little box to hold the cards in from a file by Lori Whitlock purchased from the Silhouette Online store and cut on my Cameo.  I've said it before...Lori Whitlock's are always so perfect and cut so well!  She must have been an engineer in a previous life!

Here is the box...using the same papers from the roses and leaves:
The bride's initials were also cut on the Cameo using a font I have installed on my computer that I love...Lavenderia.

Here is another look...a little creamy organza bow finished it off:

And that's it for today...Happy Crafting and Happy Sunday!

Happy Easter!

I made a few Easter cards to send to family and friends using a "HAPPY" die from Impression Obsessions I bought at Impressive Ideas (our fabulous local stamp store) a week or so ago.  I thought this was a great and versatile die.

These cards whipped up pretty quickly...the die cuts beautifully!!!

Here is the first one I made:

"Easter" was done with the Marketing Script font and cut on my Silhouette Cameo.  I also cut a shadow to fit behind it to give it a little more pop as we say in the card creating world.

I cut the letter for "HAPPY" a second time and adhered them to the card base with some foam tape.
And lastly...a bit of ribbon finished off this card.

Here is the second one I made:

Same idea...just done in a horizontal manner.

Again...easy and fast.  How great is this die??? I can use it for Birthdays, Halloween, 4th of July...any number of other significant days, ya know?

Definitely one to be used again!

Happy Crafting and Happy Easter!

And a Very Belated Happy Valentine's Day to You!

Oh my....I so meant to post yesterday to wish everyone a Happy Valentine's Day but the day got past me.  My Valentine was here with me and we were able to spend a nice day together doing a hike and going out for a nice meal.

A friend of mine got a Tiffany necklace.  I as jealous of that.  No jewels for me.  LOL!

But I did make a few exploding box cards for my kids from a file by Lori Whitlock which I found in the Silhouette store.  I think they are so cute and were so much fun to make.  I think Lori does and amazing job on her files...they always go together perfectly!

Here is the first one:
I used BoBunny papers....love the frogs and ladybugs and other little critters!  Isn't it adorable?  Look at that folded envelope.  So sweet!

My friend and fellow creative person (she is über creative...amazing what she does!), Debbie, was here with me for a few days and she enjoyed making one, too.

Here are two other versions...the one Debbie did is on the right:
So much fun!  On to the Silhouette Store to see if they have one for St. Patrick's Day! ;)

Gift Card Box

I found this very cute gift card box file in the Silhouette Online Store by Jamie Lane Designs.  It cut very easily and was fun to put together.  What is different about this little guy is that it has a little "pop up" that holds the gift card.

I have a friend who had a baby about a hundred years ago and I was really late getting a gift to her so today was the day....

I made the little card box with some Die Cuts With a View papers called Baby Boy Nursery.

After I took the photo and was heading out the door I realized I hadn't taken a photo showing how the pop up mechanism works so I stopped quickly and took another photo:

And no...I didn't give the new mother a Lowe's gift card....it was just one I had to show how the card sits.

I love it...love the way these boxes cut and I thought the flower on top was so pretty!

Gift Wrap

I love one of a kind gift wrap. I don't necessarily love gift wrapping but I do love, occasionally, fixing up a box or bag. I think my boxes and bags are sometimes better than the gifts within! LOL! It's all about the presentation, baby!

My cutie pie hair stylist is getting ready to have her third baby...a boy...next month. She has a set of twin girls who are both as cute as can be and are pretty excited, I imagine, about becoming big sisters!

I bought her a couple of little things and then fiddled until I came up with a cute way to give it to her. She loved it and almost had to be coaxed to open the box! LOL!  She is decorating the nursery in a plane theme so I thought it would be cute to do a package with a little plane on it, too.

Here is what I came up with using a design from PPbN in the Silhouette Online Store:
The clouds are some I made with welded circles and I typed the text with the Pacifico font onto a path to get the curved shape and welded it.....this is a great font for welding!  Isn't that just too cute.
They are not telling anyone what name they've chosen for this precious little boy...but their last name is Jones so I added it.
And then I made this very simple card with another cut file from the Silhouette Online store designed by Daniela Angelova.

And then a little handmade envelope with my We R Memory Keeper Envelope Punch Board finished it off!

It was loved and shared and this made it all worth while, right?

Happy Crafting!

As the New Year Approaches...

2015 is literally right around the corner, isn't it? I'm always a little sad as the year ends but am excited about what 2015 may bring.

2014 has been a wonderful year...the high point is always when I am with my children and grandchildren and I had lots of opportunity for that in 2014. The wedding of my son to his bride was certainly at the top of the list, too.

The foot surgery...not so much...but I am looking forward to being pain free and hopefully am saving myself foot problems in the future!  I'm doing well...getting around well...but looking forward to when I can get a little more exercise!

I fell in love with these 3D cards designed by Lori Whitlock.  I am so very much hoping that she designs more for other holidays and events!  Here is the last one I made and decided to use it to wish someone a Happy New Year.  I love the way this one turned out, as well...gives the feel of a snowy, wintry day.

Here you can see the layers a bit more:
I love the contrast of the red bird against the white...so very pretty to me.

I am itching to get into my craft room but probably won't be able to for a few days! I have an out of town guest who is not a crafter and we spend our time together talking, eating, reading and yapping.  What a great friend...sure wish she scrapbooked or paper crafted, though! Anyway, she is a wonderful friend and I am so happy to have her here as we bring in the New Year.

Happy New Year to ya'all!

A Belated Merry Christmas!

Christmas is over...a big sigh of relief is heard around the world...but I know many, like me, always feel a little sad that it is over.

We had a wonderful day filled with family....it was crazy, hectic but so much fun. David and Taylor were so excited about Santa.  I love Christmas through the eyes of the little ones.  So much magic!

I had made this 3D card for the grandkids which I gave them a few days before Christmas with a little treat.  I think the card was played with a bit too much and is now a heap of nothing but it was cute while it lasted.  And since I have the file I can make another one whenever! ;)

It was created from a file designed by Lori Whitlock who makes the most amazing stuff!!!

I just love the detail in it.  It cuts so beautifully on my Silhouette.  I am hoping Lori Whitlock comes out with more designs for other events!  The sentiment was stamped with a Hero Arts stamp and Memento pigment ink...and then embossed with clear embossing powder.

Here is a close up of the layers:

I think Santa would have liked this card! :)

Happy Crafting and for me...a day of resting! LOL!

I entered this in the Anything Goes Challenge at Simon Says Stamp HERE.

Gift Card Boxes

I have further simplified my Christmas giving life by not running around and buying STUFF that people don't want or need and giving Gift Cards to my kids and their spouses.  I do get a few things for them to unwrap but the bulk of their gifts are in the form of Gift Cards.  I love a Gift Card (I don't know why I'm capitalizing them...but oh well!) so we do love giving what we love receiving, right?  Anyway, I wanted to present them in a cute way and have done all sorts of gift card holders in the past but came across some cute little box designs in the Silhouette Online Store designed by Jamie Cripps.  I thought they were so cute and promptly bought several files.  I had fun cutting them out and assembling them...using papers I've had on hand from previous years.  Mambi, Recollections and probably some DCWV in there, too.
The first one is just a cute little snowflake and the box is cut out of printed paper (Christmasy) but I used the white side for the outside of the box.
The second one is this cute little holly box.
The 3third on is with a Christmas tree:
...I already tied this one with some baker's twine.

And the last one is of a cute little Santa Claus look:
Here you can see how the boxes open:
There is actually a little box within a box...so cute!  And so easy!

Then I made a few tags which I tied on to each box.  I used an EK success punch and some Hero Arts Stamps for the "To:" and "From" and added some little Jolee's stickers to them.  Done! Easy! Fast! Cute!!

Today I go back for my first post op visit.  I am amazed with how quickly this old gal is recovering...barely a limp!!!  Bandages come off and I get to see that bad girl! :)

Happy Crafting and hopefully some de-stressing!
